The electric Tesla X car kills its owner in California after crashing with a barrier on a highway.
The accident killed Walter Wong, a 38-year-old Apple engineer. It was confirmed that the autopilot system was activated with the adaptive speed control system during the accident. Several alerts appeared a few seconds before the accident telling the driver to take over and control the steering wheel. However, the driver had only five seconds and 150 meters before hitting the cement barrier.
The US authorities have investigated the incident. Tesla did not say why the system failed to detect the concrete barrier, saying only that the system is not a complete system but only made driving safer. Added that the self-driving system does not prevent accidents, but makes them less likely to fall and that the world can be safer by using such a system for pedestrians and drivers and motorcycles.
The incident comes less than two weeks after the self-guided, self-tracking Volvo XC90, which killed a woman in Arizona while driving her motorcycle. This led to the suspension of the joint car company, Toyota and Infidia to stop the self-driving test program.
